Straight Ahead

At the age of 16 I learned a valuable life lesson the first time behind the wheel in drivers’ education class. While driving on a long strip of road, I started to swerve everywhere. My teacher told me it was because I was focused on the road only a few feet in front of the car. To correct the problem, he encouraged me to look a ways down the road. As I started concentrating on where I was going instead of where I was at, the swerving ceased.

In the middle of life we often become too focused with where we are at that we end up swerving. We get so bogged down with deadlines, responsibilities, projects, and events that we can easily lose sight of where it is we are exactly going. When that happens, we start to swerve through life exhausted, overwhelmed, and discouraged.

I believe in “being in the moment,” but if we do not keep focused on where we are ultimately going, we will crash and burn. The Apostle Paul said that he kept his eye on what was ahead. If anyone had reason to get discouraged and disillusioned with where he was at in life, it was Paul. He was constantly criticized, beaten, and put in jail for preaching about Jesus. Keeping his gaze toward heaven helped him get through the tough road that he was on much of his life.

If you find yourself swerving on the road of life this week, get your eyes off of what is right in front of you and set your sight on what is straight ahead—eternity with Christ.

Be Blessed,

Stephanie

You're so right! I find it all too easy to look at my immediate circumstances and forget that they are just a moment in time that will pass more quickly than expected. But if I get stuck in that moment, I miss what God has coming up. Thanks for the reminder, especially during mid-terms!

Bless you,
Christine Carter
